The alarming situation and persecution of Aramean Christians
Enschede (13-5-2016) – De Aramese beweging voor mensenrechten organiseert samen met EU-parlementariër Annie Schreijer-Pierik een conferentie over de vervolgende Arameeërs in Syrië en Iraq. De nood is hoog en de situatie van de Arameeërs is schrijnend. Uit Iraq (Mosul) hebben wij uitgenodigd Aartsbischop Nicodemus Daoud Matti Sharaf en uit Syrië (Homs/Al Qaryatain) hebben wij uitgenodigd pastoor Abuna Zuhri. Zij komen hun bijzondere verhaal vertellen in het Europees Parlement om meer aandacht en hulp te vragen voor de vervolgde en onderdrukte Arameeërs in het Midden-Oosten.

Op woensdagmiddag 25 mei 2016 organiseerde de Aramese Beweging voor Mensenrechten (ABM) samen met de Werkgroep Interculturele Relaties en Interreligieuze Dialoog van de fractie van de Europese Volkspartij in het Europese Parlement een conferentie over de “Alarmerende situatie en vervolging van Aramese christenen”. Sprekers waren o.a. de Syrisch-Orthodoxe aartsbisschop van Mosoel, Mor Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf, de Syrisch-Orthodoxe pastoor Zuhri Khazaal uit Homs, Severiyos Aydin van de Aramese hulporganisatie Aramaic Relief, genocide-deskundige Anthonie Holslag en onderzoeksjournalist Arnold Karskens. De voorzitter van de Wereldraad van Arameeërs, Johny Messo, stond ook op het programma, maar moest zijn spreektijd afstaan aan de Nederlandse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, Bert Koenders. Dit laatste omdat conferentievoorzitter en Europarlementariër Annie Schreijer-Pierik koning Willem Alexander die diezelfde middag een toespraak in het Europees Parlement hield voor de conferentie had uitgenodigd die daar zelf echter geen tijd voor had, maar vond dat ‘zijn’ minister van Buitenlandse Zaken wel moest gaan.
